Dental emergencies in Málaga: what to do
· General information: it does not replace seeing a dentist.
Call 112 if the swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, you have a high fever, you find it hard to swallow or breathe, you have had a hard blow to the face, or your mouth keeps bleeding.
If you have a public health card
The public health system treats acute dental problems in adults: infections and inflammation of the mouth, injuries to teeth and jaw, wounds in the mouth and acute jaw-joint problems. Go to your health centre or, outside its hours, to the primary care emergency service.
To book an appointment or find out where to go, call Salud Responde: 955 545 060, the Junta de Andalucía’s 24-hour line.
For adults, public healthcare does not cover treatments such as fillings, root canals or implants: for those you will need a private clinic.
At a private clinic
In the list of clinics in Málaga city you can tick “Sees emergencies” to see those that say so, and the “Open now” badge shows which ones are open right now based on their published hours. Call before you go to make sure they can see you.
Until you get to the dentist
- Adult tooth knocked out: hold it by the crown, never by the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly with water without scrubbing, keep it in milk or saliva and see a dentist as soon as possible, ideally within an hour.
- Broken tooth: keep the fragment if you find it and avoid chewing on that side.
- Pain and swelling: you can apply something cold to the outside of your face. Do not apply heat or put aspirin on the gum. If you take painkillers, follow the leaflet or a professional’s advice.
These are first-aid tips. They do not replace an assessment by a dentist or by emergency services.
